Save the White Elephant

Join the Crusade

You, too, can be a champion for white elephants everywhere. Do your part by hosting a White Elephant Party this year.

Here's how:

  • Invite six or more activist friends who will be excited to join your crusade to save the white elephant.

  • Emphasize that the point of this party is to regift something that could be useful to or enjoyed by another party member. Saving the white elephant is about recycling, saving money and capitalizing on creativity.

  • Get crazy with your gift wrap—the weirder the better—and make sure to not put your name on the package, as guessing who your gift is from is half the fun.

  • When your guests arrive, have them show their solidarity by doing their best elephant impression when they introduce themselves to other partygoers.

  • Live the cause by serving all white foods at your party. Elephant shaped cookies will earn you bonus points with your passionate cause-minded guests.

  • When everyone is ready for the exchange, have all participants draw a number from a hat.

  • Starting with #1, have each guest choose and open a gift.

  • The next person will have the difficult decision of whether to choose a new gift, or to "steal" an already opened gift from somebody else.

If they steal a gift, the person with the stolen gift has the option of stealing from someone else, or opening a new gift.

This continues until somebody decides to stick with their gift.

  • Don't worry if that beautiful venetian mask with ribbons, roses and feathers is a hot commodity. You can stop the endless chain of stealing by ruling that gifts can only be stolen twice before they're considered "safe."

  • Go to the next person in order and repeat. The exchange continues until every white elephant has been adopted by a loving owner. Happy White Elephanting!
